The incident had happened at about 5:30 p.m.

The chairman of the party in the council area, Ikechukwu Igwebuike, told Newsmen that no life had been lost in the attack, but that some members sustained injuries.

“They just stormed the venue on three motorcycles and started firing,” he said.

Mr Igwebuike said the gunmen shot in the air, and later hit some people with their rifles, apparently to disrupt the meeting.

“We believe strongly that this is the handiwork of the opposition party,” he said, without mentioning the party.

“The windshield of one of our members’ vehicle was shattered,” Mr Igwebuike added.

Earlier, on Wednesday, some LP members were also attacked by gunmen in Nenwe, a community in Aninri Local Government Area of the state.

The gunmen, numbering about four, stormed the venue on two motorcycles.

It was not clear, for now, if they were the same gunmen that attacked party members in Awgu.

In another report, the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa who is also the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday was in Anambra where he had declared that the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and Labour Party are in trouble given the support that his party is getting in the state.

APGA is the governing party in Anambra while the state is also home to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party. But the Delta state governor had declared that PDP will come out strong in the 2023 election in Anambra even with Obi and the presidential candidate of APGA on the ballot.

Okowa gave the assurance while addressing PDP stakeholders in Anambra at the Constituency Office of Senator Uche Ekwunife in Awka.
