John Obi Mikel, a former Chelsea midfielder, has claimed that the Blues’ supporters wanted Napoli striker Victor Osimhen to join the Premier League west London club and not Liam Delap.
The former Super Eagles captain said this after Delap recorded an assist on his debut for Chelsea as they defeated Los Angeles 2-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup group-stage encounter played at the weekend.
Recall that goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez gave Enzo Maresca’s side the victory against the USA club at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Speaking to DAZN (as per TBR), Obi Mikel said: “We needed somebody to come in and score those goals [for Chelsea] and finish those chances, but obviously Delap was not the guy the fans wanted.
“Obviously we know who the fans wanted, the fans wanted Victor Osimhen to the football club, but he didn’t.
“Delap is young. I wish him well and I hope he succeeds in this club.”
Chelsea signed Delap from Ipswich Town, while they failed to reach a deal with sign Osimhen last year.
However, Chelsea are still linked with a move for the Nigeria international.
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has officially turned down a fifth offer from Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal, reaffirming his desire to remain in Europe.
In a post shared via X (formerly Twitter) handle, journalist Buchi Laba. Laba revealed that Osimhen has shut the door on any potential move to Saudi Arabia, regardless of the financial incentives.
“Victor Osimhen officially rejects Al Hilal 5th offer,” Laba wrote. “He has decided to not move there no matter the money offered. Case closed ”
