Niger Govt Pardons 11 On Death Row, Urges Clemency For Others

The Niger Governor, Mohammed Bago has approved an unconditional pardon to 11 death row inmates in the state.

The pardon was announced by the state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Nasiru Mu’azu on Tuesday.

The inmates were involved in a communal clash between Gaba and Anfani communities of Lavun Local Government area of the state, which led to the loss of lives and property,” he added.

Those who enjoyed the pardon are Mohammed Mohammed, Nana Sheshi, Isah Nmadu, Mohammed Mohammed Ndabida, Abubakar Salihu and Baba Shaba.

Others are, Adamu Babaminin, Haruna Mohammed, Isah Mohammed Alhaji Inuwa, Ibrahim Mohammed and Mohammed Isah.

According to him, the pardon was well thought out after a thorough review by the governor and the State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

“State pardon is also part of the reconciliatory efforts to ensure lasting peace between both communities, adding that several meetings had been held, and all issues resolved.”

The Commissioner also advised others with similar issues to forward a written request.

In other news, the Lagos State Government is set to reintroduce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

It is part of the strategy to promote a cleaner, safer, and flood-free Lagos.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

Wahab was speaking on Sunday during an inspection tour of Idi-Araba, Orile Iganmu, and Alaba Rago in Ojo Local Government Area.

According to Wahab, the return of the monthly exercise is currently under consideration at the State Executive Council level.
