The Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has nominated three candidates for the position of Acting Vice Chancellor.

This is coming as the current acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, whose tenure ends on May 19, 2025, is reportedly vying for the substantive role.

Ikechebelu is stepping down to comply with Federal Ministry of Education guidelines, which state that a sitting acting Vice Chancellor does not qualify to run for the position.

Following the directive of the council of the university, Ikechebelu yesterday convened a Senate meeting to nominate five persons for the position, but just three were unveiled as candidates.

The nominated candidates include Prof. AU Nnonyelu, Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi, and Prof. Ada Sam Omenyi.

The Eastern Updates gathered that part of the criteria would be that the acting Vice Chancellor must have been a Deputy Vice Chancellor, and must be above 65.

The university’s council will on Friday sit to pick one among the three shortlisted candidates. It was gathered that the candidates have also commenced intense lobbying.

A source within the university said the appointment process is expected to be in strict adherence to the Ministry of Education guidelines promoting transparency, equity, and fairness.

It had also been reported that The management of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, NAU, has expelled Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious from the institution.

This was announced on Friday in a statement by the Acting Registrar, Victor Modebelu.

Modebelu said the Acting Vice-Chancellor had received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee on the student’s assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theater and Film Studies.

According to the statement, Chimamaka was found to be guilty of gross misconduct and violation of the Students Disciplinary Regulations, particularly Regulation 4.

“The Ag. Vice-Chancellor, consequently, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the Committee’s recommendation that you be expelled and you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka,” the statement added.

in other news, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, has described Kenneth Okonkwo’s departure from the party as a welcome development. He stated that Okonkwo’s exit brings relief as the party focuses on strengthening its structure and preparing to challenge the current administration in the 2027 elections.
