I Have Capacity To Be President Of Nigeria – Gov Makinde

Listen to article

The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday declared that he has what it takes to become Nigeria’s president.

He disclosed this in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

Makinde is a second-term governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

However, he said the 2027 elections would be a contest between Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, rather than between PDP and APC.

Makinde said: “I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land and I have what it takes but what I want to do right now, is it what Nigerians are asking for right now, is it what my party will say we should do, we don’t know; we still have a long time to go.

“But where we are right now is that we must fix our party, we must have a platform for you to even aspire to be anything.

“Let me also say this: If my political journey ends here, I am also happy.”

In other news, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has said that President Bola Tinubu’s imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the appointment of a retired military chief as sole administrator threatens Nigeria’s hard-won democracy.

National Secretary of the CUPP, Chief Peter Ahmed said this in Abuja, on Monday.

He explained that of particular concern was the slow and steady dismantling of democratic structures in Rivers State under the President’s watch.

According to him, President Tinubu’s legal battle against Nigeria’s 36 state governors over financial autonomy for local government councils earlier on inspired hope for grassroots development.

This, he said followed the Supreme Court judgement enforcing the rights of local councils to enjoy the financial freedom hitherto denied them by the various state governors.

Ameh said, “This decision was heralded as a step toward strengthening Nigeria’s grassroots governance, reinforcing the constitutional mandate for elected local leadership.
