The Edo State Government has reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise, more than eight years after it was discontinued by the immediate past administration of Godwin Obaseki.
The Eastern Updates reports that the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Benin City.
Ikhilor stated that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise would be held on the last Saturday of every month, between 7 am and 10 am.
He further revealed that the exercise is scheduled to commence on Saturday, 26 April 2025.
He explained that the reintroduction of the exercise is rooted in the commitment of the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, to ensure a healthier and cleaner environment for the people of Edo State.
Ikhilor stated that during the exercise, both human and vehicular movements would be strictly prohibited, except for officers on essential duties.
He emphasised that the restriction of movement is intended to ensure that all residents of the state actively participate in the exercise aimed at maintaining cleanliness in their immediate surroundings.
In other news, a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and member of the party’s Board of Trustees, Bode George, has said that Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President, cannot be the opposition party’s presidential candidate in 2027.
He disclosed this in an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, on Monday.
According to him, it is against the PDP’s internal zoning policy for a northern candidate to emerge from the party in 2027.
“Atiku can’t be the PDP presidential candidate in 2027. Our internal zoning policy makes it compulsory to be eight years for the South and North. If Atiku emerges as the PDP candidate in 2027 by any means, the party will collapse,” he stated.
His remarks come as the PDP Governors’ Forum on Monday rejected the Atiku-led opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
Atiku was PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, which was won by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In the past week, Atiku, Peter Obi, and the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, unveiled a coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu in 2027.
