Vital For Stability: Uzodinma Backs Emergency Rule In Rivers

Listen to article

Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, has expressed full support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a bold move to restore order and stability.

Governor Hope Uzodimma characterized the appointment of a Sole Administrator as a forward-thinking measure essential to averting an impending crisis that risked unsettling both Rivers State and Nigeria’s broader economy. Speaking to journalists in Owerri, he underscored the critical role Rivers State plays in the nation’s economic stability, especially given its prominence in crude oil production.

He pointed out that persistent political friction and the failure of influential figures to heed counsel had elevated the situation into a matter of national security. Uzodimma drew attention to recent incidents of pipeline bombings and explosions in the state, arguing that such disturbances are untenable at a juncture when Nigeria is focused on ramping up crude oil output to bolster its currency and economic health.

“The President was very proactive, and his actions are highly commendable. Prevention, they say, is better than cure. Imagine what would have happened if the impeachment went ahead—it would have triggered actions and reactions, leading to violence and widespread unrest,” Uzodimma stated.

Governor Hope Uzodimma praised the National Assembly for endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint a Sole Administrator, viewing it as a measure aligned with the nation’s best interests. He voiced optimism about the Federal Executive Council’s capacity to manage the situation adeptly, ensuring the maintenance of law and order.

Although he acknowledged that the Progressive Governors’ Forum had not yet met since the announcement, Uzodimma, in his role as chairman, asserted with certainty that the forum fully backs the President. He concluded by stating that, based on his understanding, no forum member would oppose the President’s actions, emphasizing their collective support for decisions aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s security and stability.
