President Donald Trump of the United States on Tuesday said his country’s economy is set to experience some disturbance from tariffs as trade tensions flare after he imposed sweeping levies on Mexico, Canada and China.
Trump’s comments at a joint session of Congress came after he pushed forth with tariff hikes on the three countries over illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, however, rebuked the move and retaliatory levies.
In the same vein, China responded with countermeasures, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum similarly promised pushback.
“Tariffs are not just about protecting American jobs. They’re about protecting the soul of our country,” Trump said Tuesday.
“There’ll be a little disturbance, but we’re okay with that. It won’t be much,” he added.
Trudeau early Tuesday accused Trump of trying to cause the collapse of Canada’s economy to make it easier for the United States to annex his country, and blasted Washington for targeting a close ally while appeasing Russia over Ukraine.
It was gathered that Trump’s 25 percent duties on Mexican and Canadian imports affect everything from avocados to the lumber crucial for building US homes, snarling supply chains for key sectors like automobiles.
Canadian energy resources face a lower rate.
On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky articulated a desire to mend relations with U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing his intent to collaborate under Trump’s “resolute guidance” to forge enduring peace for Ukraine—a strategic overture amid strained transatlantic ties.
In his initial public remarks following the Trump administration’s suspension of U.S. military assistance, Zelensky described his highly publicized confrontation with Trump the previous week as a lamentable misstep, committing to finalize a pivotal minerals agreement with Washington to bolster bilateral bonds.
He proposed a provisional cessation of hostilities across maritime and aerial domains as an inaugural measure toward resolving the three-year conflict with Russia, signaling a pragmatic shift in Kyiv’s diplomatic stance.
The disintegration of the wartime partnership between Kyiv and Washington has unfolded starkly in recent days, precipitated by a contentious Oval Office encounter between Zelensky and Trump on Friday, February 28, and culminating in the United States—Ukraine’s foremost ally—withholding vital military support, a development that has reverberated across global capitals.
