The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has scheduled 9 August 2025 for the conduct of fresh Local Government Council Elections in the state.

RSIEC Chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting and the official unveiling of the 2025 Local Government Elections timetable and guidelines at the commission’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Addressing stakeholders, Justice Enebeli reaffirmed RSIEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and impartial election, urging political parties to adhere to the rules.

He also outlined the commission’s plans for consultations, sensitisation programmes, and private meetings with political parties to address concerns and enhance the electoral process.

Justice Enebeli described the recent Supreme Court judgment as a temporary setback that would ultimately strengthen the commission in preparation for the August 2025 elections.

The meeting was attended by political party leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, religious organisations, the media, civil society groups, NGOs, and community-based organisations.

The Eastern Updates recalls that the Supreme Court on Friday sacked the 23 LGA chairmen, citing a violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act.

The apex court declared the 5 October 2024 elections that ushered in the new chairmen as void.

In other news, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by its speaker, Martin Amaewhule, has written to Governor Simi Fubara, demanding the sack of all commissioners in the state within 48 hours.

In a letter sighted by The Eastern Updates, the resolution came after the House met on Wednesday.

The Assembly also demanded the sack of other appointees not properly screened by the lawmakers.

Consequently, the Amaewhule-led House ordered Governor Fubara to submit a new list of nominees for appointment as commissioners within 48 hours.
