Israel Targets Hezbollah Arms Facility In Syria

Listen to article

The Israeli military stated on Tuesday that it struck a Hezbollah weapons storage facility in a Syrian town close to the Lebanese border. At the same time, Syrian state media reported that the airstrikes resulted in damage to surrounding residential buildings, sparking concerns about the collateral damage in a volatile region.

The Israeli military reported that it executed an “intelligence-based strike” targeting weapons storage facilities utilized by Hezbollah’s munitions unit in the vicinity of Al-Qusayr. This operation underscores Israel’s ongoing efforts to disrupt Hezbollah’s military capabilities amid escalating tensions in the region.

“Hezbollah’s munitions unit is responsible for the storage of weapons in Lebanon and has recently expanded its activities into Syria in the area of-Al Qusayr,” it added.

The official SANA news agency in Syria claimed that “an Israeli aggression targeted the industrial zone in Al-Qusayr,” illustrating the continuing pattern of military strikes in the area. This development raises concerns about the potential for further escalations in an already volatile environment.

“The Israeli aggression also targeted some residential buildings surrounding the industrial zone,” it added.

The news did not specify any casualties resulting from the recent military actions. In the broader context, the Syria-Lebanon border has experienced a surge in military operations as Israel seeks to prevent Hezbollah from replenishing its weapons stock after the conflict escalated dramatically in September.

The main border crossing, known as Masnaa on the Lebanese side, was put out of service by an Israeli strike last month.

On Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Al-Qusayr. The Britain-based war monitor said the dead were mostly civilians but also included three Syrian fighters for Hezbollah.

The Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee said “weapons depots and headquarters” used by Hezbollah were hit in the Thursday strike.

He said the strikes sought to thwart efforts to “transfer weapons from Iran via Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon”
