Former Abia State Governor and current Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has openly shared that his monthly income stands at N14 million. The figure, which some might consider high, has prompted reactions, especially in the context of broader discussions about the financial compensation of public officials.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North, disclosed his monthly earnings as part of a broader discussion on the financial structure of Nigerian lawmakers. The revelation has caught public attention.

The Senator dismissed the widespread belief that lawmakers live in affluence while the general population struggles with poverty. He argued that such perceptions are often exaggerated and do not reflect the true financial reality of serving in the Senate.

Confusion persists over the exact monthly earnings of Nigerian federal lawmakers, with conflicting statements from some lawmakers who claim their salaries can reach up to N21 million. This has heightened public interest in the compensation of elected officials.

“I earn N14 million for everything in a month. That is everything encompassing, the overhead, the worker’s salary, everybody,” Uzor-Kalu said.

Speaking further, Kalu argued that the N14 million is not enough to buy petrol to travel to his constituency, maintain the constituency office, among other things.
