A devastating incident occurred in Ogun State‘s Obafemi-Owode Local Government area, specifically in the Shogoye neighborhood of Owode-Egba, where Nwachukwu Ikechukwu died from inhaling generator fumes at his residence, as confirmed by the police command on Saturday.

In a heartbreaking incident on Thursday, Ikechukwu and Oyin Falodun were found unconscious in their sitting room by neighbor Oladayo Olasubomi, who had arrived to deliver the daily N1000 contribution. Reports indicate that the couple had turned on their generator around 10 pm, inadvertently setting off a chain of tragic events.

Olasubomi’s frantic warning drew the attention of neighboring residents, among them Chairman Showunmi Sunday, who quickly contacted the Owode-Egba police division to inform them of the devastating event.

State police command spokesperson SP Omolola Odutola revealed the information in a press statement distributed to journalists on Saturday, shedding light on the latest development.

Police personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene after receiving word of the tragedy, and their initial inspection yielded no indications of forced trauma or assault on the victims.

Odutola said that while Ikechukwu was lost to the incident, his wife who was rushed to the hospital later regained consciousness and explained what happened.

The wife was quoted to have explained, “That when it was 2200hrs of 19/09/2024 she asked her husband whether she could put off the generating engine they were using to power their fans in their bedroom, but her husband told her not to do so until when the two of them slept off.

“That the generator must have wreaked the havoc that befell them before it put itself off when the fuel inside it finished”.

She disclosed further that she later found out that both of them had fallen off their bed and that her late husband struggled to get out of bed after which he fell.

While Falodun is said to be recuperating at Ore Ofe Hospital, Owode-Egba, the corpse of Ikechukwu was said to have been deposited at the General Hospital, Owode-Egba for autopsy.
