With the looming threat of another flood disaster casting a shadow over parts of the country, the people of Goronyo Local Government Area in Sokoto State have called on the government to take action on the worsening condition of the dam in Yan-Rimawa. Residents fear that unless the dam is fixed, it could fail under pressure, worsening any potential flooding.
Speaking to reporters, Bello Muhammad, a resident of Takakume village, one of the communities neighboring the dam, stressed the need for the government’s swift intervention. He warned that the dam is nearing collapse and that immediate assistance is critical to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the people.
Mohammed, voicing his deep fears over the dam’s worsening condition, stressed that if it collapses, it will lead to a major catastrophe, impacting not only the local government but the entire state.
He called on the government to act without delay, pointing to the flooding disaster that struck Maiduguri last Tuesday as a warning of what could happen if preventive measures aren’t taken.
Nasiru Aliyu from Kagara community in Goronyo Local Government Area in his comment also appealed to “both the federal and Sokoto governments to act fast and ensure that the Dam is not affected in anyway in the interest of safety of lives and properties of the people in the area.”
Speaking up, Abubakar Nura of Kojiyo community urged that the dam be given high priority, given the recent flooding disaster in Maiduguri, which highlights the need for immediate intervention.

“I think our governments at all levels should learn how to take corrections, act fast, and also take cue from past events. We’re still mourning the Borno flood disaster, yet there’s another staring us right in our eyes.
“Look at the threat that this Gorornyo Dam has become. Look at this Dam here in Gorornyo. We should not be talking about solutions after problem. It is safer, cheaper, and better we do something now before things get out of hand,” Nura lamented.
