A flood warning has been issued for Kebbi State, as the River Niger system’s water level reaches critical heights. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency is sounding the alarm, cautioning that the situation could quickly spiral out of control.
With the river’s water level showing no signs of receding, the state’s residents are bracing themselves for a potentially devastating flood event.
According to Umar Mohammed, Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Kebbi State is staring down the barrel of a potential flood crisis, courtesy of upstream activities in Niger and Mali.
Mohammed’s warning paints a dire picture which hinted at a perfect storm of water and weather that could unleash devastation on the state.
“The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), hereby brings to the attention of the general public the rising water levels of the River Niger system as of 23rd August 2024.
“This is due to among others a report from the Niger Basin Authority (NBA), in Niamey Niger Republic.

“The situation in Niamey is informed by upstream activities in both Niger and Mali. Flood waters from these 2 countries are expected to move gradually into Nigeria through Kebbi State.
“The Dams operators at Kianji and Jebba on the River Niger have been informed and are prepared. It is important to note that as of 22nd August 2024, the Dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs.
“There is a need for all the states and communities along the River Niger system to be on alert from August ending and September.
The agency has vowed to remain vigilant in tracking the flood situation, promising to disseminate regular updates to the public in a bid to keep them abreast of developments.
