Representative Obi Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in Abia State, believes that Alex Otti’s development efforts will likely earn him another term as governor in 2027. Aguocha is confident that the people will appreciate Otti’s progress and re-elect him.
Labour Party’s Aguocha fired back at Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu’s claim that the All Progressives Congress would dominate the 2027 Abia State gubernatorial race. Aguocha’s response highlights the Labour Party’s fierce commitment to defending their turf, following Otti’s historic win on the party’s platform.
In an interview that has taken the internet by storm, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu flatly rejected the idea of being the country’s sixth-ranking official, especially if it means his state would be under the control of a competing political party, fueling speculation and debate.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, representing Bende federal constituency of Abia State on the APC platform, made a bold declaration: the next governor of Abia must come from his party, citing the need to express gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his pivotal role in signing the South East Development Commission Bill into law, among other accomplishments.
Aguocha, in a direct address to Kalu from Abuja, confidently stated that the Abia State Government House will remain occupied in 2027, effectively blocking Kalu’s APC ambitions and signaling the Labour Party’s intent to hold onto power.

“If your ambition is to become the governor of Abia State by 2027, it is your right, but make it plain rather than hiding yourself in the shadows of discontent and display of insincerity and intemperate political culture.
“But I assure you that as you want Abians to repay Tinubu for his good works, so shall Abians repay Otti for his mammoth achievements in 2027. Otti will be re-elected governor of Abia State.
“In your recent visits and encounters with his excellency, ‘De Alley’, as you fondly call him, you had seized every opportunity to debunk many tales of your ambition for the governorship stool of Abia State in 2027 and each time pledging loyalty and support to the demonstrable and visible achievements of Governor Otti.
“My honourable colleague, you should be made to know that there is no vacancy in Abia State in 2027. As you are aware, for almost 24 years, this is the first time Abia has awakened to great leadership and governance strides. Anyone that does not appreciate Otti is an avowed enemy of progress. The Labour Party also won Bende federal constituency in 2023. We can also be brazen enough to declare that seat vacant again.
“Sir, you must now use that all-important position as deputy speaker of the 10th House of Representatives to de-marginalise and reduce the agitation of our people and promote inclusiveness.
The speaker reminded the deputy speaker that this was not the first instance where the South East had held the position, citing Emeka Ihedioha’s tenure in 2011, and cautioned against squandering the current opportunity on mere prestige and boastful declarations of his sixth-ranking status.
