Vice President Kashim Shettima has highlighted that the recent Supreme Court ruling, which grants full financial independence to local government councils, will significantly bolster Nigeria’s universal basic education system.

He made these remarks on Thursday at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja during the public launch of “Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria,” a book authored by former Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Professor Modupe Adelabu.

He stated that local governments, which are tasked with delivering primary education, will be able to overcome the financial challenges that have obstructed their ability to align with the government’s educational objectives through this autonomy.

According to the Vice President, the reforms currently being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership are set to resolve the deficiencies and ideological barriers that have been obstructing the progress of universal education in the country.

He noted, “As stewards of this nation, His Excellency President Bola Tinubu is championing the reform of institutions tasked with confronting the ideologies and inadequacies that have obstructed the progress of universal education in Nigeria.”

The absence of autonomy for local governments, which are tasked with providing primary education, has resulted in major financial obstacles to aligning these administrative units with our educational goals.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling that allows local government councils to manage their own resources, governance is brought closer to the people, offering renewed optimism for our educational initiatives.”

The Vice president highlighted that the circumstances faced by the Tinubu administration require swift action to ensure education is both accessible and attractive to every Nigerian child, promoting sustained national growth.

Commending Prof. Adelabu, the Vice President acknowledged her book for offering solutions to some of the most urgent issues confronting policymakers, adding that it “will certainly inspire informed dialogue about the state and future of education in Nigeria.”

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State earlier commended Professor Adelabu for her impactful contributions to the advancement of education and broader societal development in Nigeria.

Prof. Siyan Oyeweso from the Department of History and International Studies at Osun State University praised Adelabu’s work during his review of the book.

He remarked, “The author has distinctly addressed the interplay of politics and financing in education. Politics, education, and finance are inseparable, as the key stakeholders are political figures

Participants in the book discussion, such as former Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, stressed the critical need to differentiate between simply attending school and receiving quality education.

Prof. Modupe Adelabu, author of the book, pointed out the critical need for an extensive re-evaluation of the current education system.
