Abia Extends Nurses’ Service Years, Retirement Age Now 65

Listen to article

The Abia State government has taken a thoughtful approach to healthcare by increasing the retirement age for nurses to 65.

Meanwhile, Ngozi Okoronkwo, the former health commissioner, has been cleared of allegations of financial mismanagement, allowing her to move forward.

The government’s investigation into Okoronkwo’s alleged misconduct was still in progress when she unexpectedly submitted her resignation last month. Her suspension had been made public two months prior, but it seems she preferred to exit the scene rather than see the inquiry through to its conclusion.

Governor Alex Otti used his monthly media engagement platform, “Governor Otti Speaks,” to address the public last weekend in Umuahia, revealing significant details and making important declarations.

The governor emphasized that the increase is a vital component of the administration’s comprehensive plan to overhaul the health sector, aiming to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and efficient for the state’s population.

Governor Otti revealed that the clearance was granted after a thorough examination of the findings from an investigative committee established by the government to probe the allegations, although the exact amount in question was not made public.

Assurances were given that no funds had been pilfered or misappropriated, but rather a number of procedural flaws had been exposed, culminating in a loss of faith in the official’s leadership. The government swiftly accepted her decision to resign, marking the conclusion of a fractious chapter.
