In a surprise move, the Labor Party in Imo State has announced its decision to sit out the upcoming local government election slated for September 21. According to Chairman Calistus Ihejiagwa, the party will not participate in the polls, citing reasons that are yet to be disclosed.

During a Labour Party confab in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Chairman Calistus Ihejiagwa let slip a stunning piece of news that’s sent shockwaves through the political sphere. The meeting, held over the weekend, was the perfect storm for Ihejiagwa’s dramatic announcement.

“We cannot participate in any election organized by the All Progressive Congress’ State Independent Electoral Commission because it will not be fair, credible and transparent,” he said.

“It would be a waste of resources and time. The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission is an agency of the government and we do not trust that it will conduct an election that could be adjudged free and fair.”

According to Ihejiagwa, the Labour Party is holding its breath as it awaits the Supreme Court’s verdict on the true victor of the November 11, 2023, gubernatorial election. With bated breath, they’re hoping the highest court in the land will soon put an end to Governor Hope Uzodimma’s tenure at Douglas House.

“Uzodinma is sitting on a stolen mandate because the LP won that election.”

The Labour Party chairman appealed to stakeholders to remain steadfast in their allegiance to the party’s core principles and actively support the revalidation and membership drive. As the party seeks to make inroads in all 27 local government areas, their collective efforts will be vital to its success.

According to Ihejiagwa, the Labour Party represents the last bastion of hope for citizens seeking to break free from the economic shackles imposed by the APC leadership. He emphasized that the party is the sole beacon of light in the darkness, offering a viable alternative to the status quo.

He informed the stakeholders that the “LP is healthy and stable and is the only strong opposition party in Imo State that is organized and has the people on her side.

“The LP is the people’s party, loved by the people and closer to the people. There’s no crisis in the party as against speculations in some quarters,” he added.

It was disclosed that the party’s constitution had undergone revisions to enhance its overall robustness. Furthermore, a tailored membership card had been created for each local government, boasting a singular design element for effortless identification.
