Ex-Senator Reiterates Call For Anioma State’s Establishment

Ex-Senator Chris Adighije, who represented Abia Central in the 9th Senate, is advocating for the Federal Government to take an unorthodox approach and invoke the doctrine of necessity to redress the South East’s lingering demand for additional states, a move he believes would promote regional balance and equity.

Senator Adighije declared in a statement that the creation of another state in the South East would help address perceived marginalization and reflect the national anthem’s renewed emphasis on unity, justice, and equal opportunities for all.

Senator Adighije has thrown his weight behind the campaign for Anioma State, aligning himself with prominent groups like Ohaneze Ndigbo to advocate for the creation of a new state in the South East, which would bring the region’s total to six states.

The quest for additional states in the South East has long been a contentious issue in the National Assembly, with the country’s constitution, specifically Chapter 1, Sections 8 and 9, presenting formidable obstacles to realizing this goal.

Adighije believes the Anioma State proposal is the most viable, citing geographical and cultural factors.

“The Federal Government should overlook the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and create an additional state in the South East with the doctrine of necessity,” he said.

In Adighije’s view, resorting to the doctrine of necessity, as in past constitutional crises, is a necessary step to address perceived injustices and prevent regional disparities, aligning with the national anthem’s emphasis on unity, justice, and equal rights for all citizens.
