The Defence Headquarters revealed on Thursday that a massive investigation is underway, with over 100 suspects being questioned in connection to the brazen attack on a military checkpoint in Abia State, which left five soldiers dead and sparked a nationwide manhunt for the IPOB/ESN perpetrators.

Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, shared this critical update with journalists during a regular briefing on the military’s ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security nationwide.

Major General Edward Buba announced that, subsequent to preliminary inquiries, the military has exonerated and released individuals deemed not complicit in the attack, highlighting their unwavering commitment to fairness and due process.

Major General Edward Buba’s briefing took a solemn turn as he revealed that nine members of the military had made the ultimate sacrifice in June, felled by the senseless violence of extremist groups.

The military’s top leadership issued a statement mourning the loss of five soldiers and six civilians, while simultaneously promising a forceful and unrelenting response to the attack.

Two weeks after the attack, General Buba addressed journalists, revealing that the military had conducted a series of intelligence-driven raids, resulting in the successful identification and destruction of multiple IPOB/ESN terrorist camps, including one in Igboro Forest, Arochukwu LGA, Abia State.

He said, “several arrests were made from the raids with those found to be culpable still in detention. Surely, there is intelligence value to the raids and arrest that were made. Those in detention are assisting troops to locate other camps, sleeper cells and high profile individuals involved in the activities of the terrorists group.”

The military’s decisive operation netted several suspects, who are now facing scrutiny for their alleged roles in the terrorist group. The arrests have generated significant intelligence, with those in detention sharing crucial information about the organization’s hidden infrastructure, dormant cells, and senior leadership.
