Listen to article

Ahead of the Imo State governorship election slated for November this year, Labour Party supporters has staged a peaceful protest to demand a credible, free and fair election in the state and the replacement of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

The protesters who bared banners and placards were sighted chanting songs at the entrance of the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The state LP Chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, told journalists that the party wants INEC to ensure that their votes count by using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine.

As part of their demands, they want the REC in the state to be replaced over allegations of compromise.

Responding, INEC’s Head, Voter Education and Publicity Department, Emmanuela Opara, assured the protesters that the commission would remain an impartial umpire and resist any attempt to compromise standards during the election.

The Eastern Updates recalls that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the just concluded presidential election, Peter Obi, had a few weeks ago boasted that his party is the party to beat in the 11th of November governorship election in Imo State.

Speaking at the flag-off of the campaigns for the party in Owerri, the state capital, Obi pointed out the LP is known for performance and excellence.

Using Abia State which his party controls as an example of good governance, Obi stated that the people of Abia State now have hope and are witnessing good governance because a ‘first-class brain’ who knows what he is doing is now the governor of the state.

He went on to describe Athan Achonu as the only governorship candidate of the party in Imo State, and Julius Abure, as the only duly recognised and authentic national chairman of the party.
