The Archdiocese of Owerri has categorically denied the recent circulation of fake news on social media, which falsely reported the construction of a new flyover directly in front of the historic Maria Assumpta Cathedral. The news claimed that the Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugoriji, had given his approval for the project. However, church officials have clarified that the claims made in the news are entirely baseless and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Archdiocese of Owerri which was made available to The Eastern Updates, they emphasised that there are no plans for a flyover construction near the cathedral. The Archdiocese reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the historical and spiritual significance of the Maria Assumpta Cathedral, an iconic landmark that holds immense religious and cultural value for the people of Owerri and beyond.

The spread of fake news has become increasingly prevalent, and the Archdiocese urges the public to rely on credible sources of information to avoid unnecessary panic and confusion.
