David Umahi, serving as the Minister of Works, has disclosed that a significant proposal of N341 billion is set for consideration to enhance bridge infrastructure in 2025.
In a briefing held on Saturday, the minister provided National Assembly members with an update on the progress of repairs for the Third Mainland and Carter bridges in Lagos, revealing this important information.
Umahi said, “If you want to call for a conference on our bridges, we are willing to answer you. We have proposed that 341 billion will be needed in 2025 to attend to our bridges. We don’t know how much this is going to cost. If we are to rebuild this Cater Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge, even 30 trillion will not be enough. So a stitch in time saves nine. This is very important.
“Berger is doing very beautiful work until they encounter this situation. So, we are putting heads with them. We are also contacting internationally to see what the solution will be.
“But it’s important that the National Assembly address their minds that we have problems. You know, that there are no problems that cannot be surmounted. But there are no problems that should be overlooked.”

In light of the dire condition of the bridges, the minister has called for immediate intervention, categorizing the situation as an urgent emergency that cannot be overlooked.
Simultaneously, the Federal Government has announced plans to initiate construction on sections three and 3B of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road, with work expected to commence by mid-December.
Umahi disclosed this during an inspection tour of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road while leading members of the National Assembly on an on-site assessment of ongoing infrastructure projects in the southwest region, recently.
He revealed that the delays on the highway’s southern corridor were initially caused by rerouting to avoid militant-controlled areas.
